A controversy has been one raging among certain parts of the folk music community regarding an article written in last August 19th’s “New York Times Magazine”.
Titled, Queer as Folk, the small-minded homophobic article makes the claim that Lesbians have taken over the singer/Songwriter community after years of being snubbed by it.
What’s almost as bad as the author David Hajdu getting it wrong and horribly mis-quoting the artists he interviewed, is the fact that there was no public stir about this article. Had the author chosen to accuse Hollywood or the mainstream music industry of being homophobic, there would be a huge outcry. Ironically, the folk music community is one of the only places that had opened itself to the gay/lesbian community, or maybe it’s more accurate to say the folk music community never judged artists based on their sexual orientation.
