It was with great sadness that I heard about the collapse of The Old Man of the Mountain in Franconia Notch, New Hampshire. I lived in NH from in 1979 to 1984 and I have never lived in a place that took more pride and it’s identity as a unique state. The Old Man of the Mountain was the symbol of NH that could be seen on licence plates, highway sign, as well as gracing the New Hampshire state quarter.r
My sympathies go out to the people of New Hampshire who lost something much more important than a rock cliff, they lost the symbol of their hardened New England history and pride.
“Men hang out their signs indicative of their respective trades; shoemakers hang out a gigantic shoe; jewelers a monster watch, and the dentist hangs out a gold tooth; but in the mountains of New Hampshire, God Almighty has hung out a sign to show that there He makes men.”
– Daniel Webster
