Given the current state of this country as well as because of the upcoming election, it’s increasingly likely that folks will get into heated debates regarding political issues. When discussion serious issues with someone who holds a far different opionion, it’s easy to let the discussion turn into an argument.

To that issue, from Caleb, we have a link to well thought out and well written A Frank Guide to a Cordial Political Discussion

Also, towards the goal of “Nonviolent Dialogue”, the AFSC (the political arm of American Quakers). have begun to help teach workshops to this end.

Nonviolent Dialogue” Workshop

(aka “how to effectively talk to people who don’t agree with you”)

Thursday May 6, 6:30 to 9 pm

St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church, 1679 Broadway (one-quarter mile south of Plymouth Rd., across from Baits Dr.; look for “Jobs Not War in 2004” yard signs in front).

Sponsored by Ann Arbor Area Committee for Peace.

Ever get tongue-tied, frustrated, red-in-the-face, or homicidal when discussing war and peace issues with pro-war friends, relatives, acquaintances, co-workers, spouses, or total strangers? Do you believe in your heart that the best way to grow the movement and create change is to reach out to that astonishingly large number of people who supported the war, but lack the patience or confidence to do it? Do you want to help us reach new voters with the “Jobs Not War in 2004” campaign? Then this workshop is for you.

Presenters from the American Friends Service Committee, through discussion and role plays, explain the LARA (listen, affirm, respond, and add) method of speech as nonviolent action – sure to make our difficult discussions more productive and peaceful.
