Tonight, just before midnight, the tornado sirens here in Ann Arbor went off. As every good Midwesterner knows, that means it’s time to head below decks. Here in my basement, sitting at the computer, I head to The Weather Underground to check the radar and read the storm warnings. Looks like a tornado has been spotted about 15 miles west, but has not necessarily touched down. That means I need to hunker down here and listen to the thunder roll and lightning flash- the flashlight nearby and a wired phone plugged into the wall.
These nighttime storms can be much scarier for kids because of the threat of losing power and being in the dark during severe weather. But there’s an excitement for me, I guess it comes from knowing that as much as we like to think we are at times, that Mother Nature gets the last word in.
