Speaking of high sugar beverages (see yesterday’s post below), I’ve noticed that I’ve been getting a lot of hits from Google searches looking for information about Frrrozen Hot Chocolate (as they spell it), the famous drink from the Manhattan institution, Serendipity. In that post last month I put in a link to a recipe for the amazing concoction. I’ve since tried the recipe only to find that it didn’t quite live up to the original. Of course that’s to be expected, especially since the recipe says to use 6 oz. of your favorite chocolate, a rather vague reference to the most important ingredient in the drink.
So, having recently made Frozen Hot Chocolate for 9 people at a dinner party, I figured I’d pass along my version of the recipe for all the folks who come to Daddyo looking for information on this wonderful desert/drink.
Scrappy’s Version of Frrozen Hot Chocolate
5 oz Ghirardelli milk chocolate chips, or a mixture of semi-sweet and milk chocolate chips.
5 teaspoons storebought hot chocolate mix
1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
1 1/4 cups milk
3 1/2 cups ice
Whipped cream
Chocolate shavings
Melt the chocolate in the top of a double boiler over simmering water, stirring occasionally until melted. Add the cocoa and sugar, stirring constantly until thoroughly blended. Remove from heat and slowly add 1/2 cup of the milk and stir until smooth. Cool to room temperature.
In a blender place the remaining cup of milk, the room temperature chocolate mixture, and the ice. Blend on high speed until smooth and the consistency of a frozen daiquiri. Pour into a giant goblet and top with whipped cream and chocolate shavings. Enjoy with a spoon or a straw. . . .or both!
