Last Saturday I woke Jeremy and Sasha up early to go to see the next VP, John Edwards, speak at a rally in Detroit. After driving for 45 minutes to Detroit Lutheran School, we joined 100’s of other folks in a field outside the school. With rock music blaring from speakers we waited over an hour for the rally to begin.

About an hour after we got there, a hand-selected crowd was moved onto the portable stage to stand behind Edwards, and then signs and stickers and American flags were passed out to the crowd. Jeremy and Sasha ended up with “Veterans for Kerry” signs. After a rousing speech from a local Minister, Michigan Governor Jennifer Grandholm came out and got the crowd going with a warm-up for Edwards. Although I’m a big fan of Ms. Grandholm, I have to say that her comparisons of the recent VP Debate to a boxing match (with fake punches included) was pretty weak.

Edward’s speech was a fairly standard stump speech, but it was cool as hell to be just a few feet away from the next Vice President as he charmed the crowd. After the speech, Edwards did the standard shake and bake, and Jeremy got to shake hands with Edwards (Sasha’s still pissed that some little kid blocked her path to the future VP).
