After last spring’s announcement heralding a new ballpark for America’s Team, the New York Mets yesterday broke ground on their new park, Citifield. Apparently the Mets decided to foster a relationship with Citigroup because of the massive bank’s commitment to the concept of Microloans.
While other ballclubs seem to only be interested in profits and championships, the Mets organization has once again proven their commitment to social change through empowering women and the poor.
In a pre-groundbreaking statement regarding the Mets views on social change through their relationship with Citigroup, Mets owner Fred Wilpon stated, “The one message that The Mets are trying to promote all the time, that poverty in the world is an artificial creation. It doesn’t belong to human civilization, and we can change that, we can make people come out of poverty and have the real state of affairs. So the only thing we have to do is to redesign our institutions and policies, and there will be no people who will be suffering from poverty.”
