Looking at the calendar I see that today is the 58th anniversary of the U.S. dropping the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. For many years this anniversary would be marked by vigils and protests, but the two attacks on Japan nearly 60 years ago appear to have been forgotten by most Americans.r

Today the mayor of Hiroshima marked the anniversary of its annihilation, by saying that the United States seems to “worship nuclear weapons as God,” while Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi reiterated Japan’s commitment to the global elimination of nuclear arms.r

As two of the darkest days in world history, August 6th and 9th are dates that should never be forgotten, especially here in America where the killing of 100’s of thousands and the destruction of two cities was done in the name of saving American lives.
