One of the things about living in the Midwest is dealing with the potential for Tornados. Springtime is tornado season, and last night we had the first tornado warning in over two years. I was in my backyard working on a school project for my daughter, and from looking at the massing fast-moving black clouds, I could tell a big storm was brewing. Inside the house I heard the tornado warning beeps and message come over the TV Jeremy and Sasha were watching. Jeremy came running outside looking panicked, and I told him not to worry, that it was a warning for the whole Detroit area and not for Ann Arbor.r

A few minutes later the amazingly loud tornado siren that’s planted atop a telephone poll two blocks from my house went off signaling all to get inside and take cover. Jeremy flew outside looking terrified and begged me to get into the basement right then. He’s only eight and the coming storm and screaming siren scared him completely. Outside, rain poured and in parts of town dime-sized hail came down, but that was all. After I convinced Jeremy that it was okay to come up, he kept checking the radar picture on the computer to make sure the storm had passed…
